Abstract: It is well known that light ening t rip out caused b lightening flashover of electrical power t ransm ission
lines greatl influences the safet and stead operating of pow er s stem. Research has been w idel carried out w ith
calculation of lightening flashover rate of transmission lines. In calculation of lightning flashover rate of transmis
sion lines, the selection of random processes is ver important for the speed and the precision of the calculation. In
this paper, the lightening flashover rate of transmission lines is studied b using a modified M onte Carlo met hod.
T pical tow er parameters of 110 kV , 220 kV and 500 kV transmission lines are selected and the electric geometr
met hod is int roduced. T he probabilit of hitt ing the tower under different kinds of landscape and the shield failure
flashover rate under different obliquit ies are calculated. T he back flashover rate as w ell as the shield failure flasho
ver rate of t pical tow ers before and after considering the pow er
