ANIMATION and COMIC What is animation and comic? It’s the combination and abbreviation of animation（动画） and comic（漫画）. It refers to all of the animations and comics. With the development of modern media technology, the relationship between animation (animation or anime) and comic (comics, manga; especially the stories in comics) increasingly close, the two are often combined into “animation”.(动漫) Japanese anime Japan is the largest anime power in the world. Every year, Japan produces about 200 animations. At present,60% of the world’s animations are made in Japan. Animation has become one of the pillars of Japan’s economy. The developing process of Japan’s anime can be divided into four stages. 1917—1945: the germination stage In 1917,Seitaro Kitayama (北山清太郎)made the Japanese first animation “さるかにがっせん”(猿蟹合战). In 1933, Japan’s first sound cartoon “force and worldly woman”(力与世间女子) was born. 1946—1973: the exploring stage In 1952, the first color cartoon of Japan—“whale” was born, and it became the first one which won the international awards. In 1952,Tezuka Osamu(手冢治虫) began to create the first Japanese TV animation—“ASTRO BOY”(铁壁阿童木). And in 1974, he began to make “The Three-eyed One”(三眼神童). 1974—1989: the mature stage In the 1970s,Japan emerged a large number of Science Fiction mechanical animations (科幻机械动画). But, Miyazaki（宫崎骏） got rid of the limitation, and walked out of a natural,pure and fresh style. 1990—now: the refining stage In the 1990s, Japan’s animation industry further improved and produced a variety of styles.
