Unit Three Text One Chinese Food I. Object of Teaching 1. Students are supposed to know that Chinese food is a culture which combines philosophy, art. Chinese food reflects old Chinese culture. The Chinese intentions are both honorable and whole-hearted: to eat with a capital E. Therefore students are required to probe into Chinese cuisine. 2. Students are supposed to grasp the usage of the following key words: Gourmet, Glutton, Ecstasy, Smother, Lavish, bedeck, Contrive, Palate, Buffet, Piquant, Enterprise II. Warm-up Exercises 1. Are you interested in Chinese food? Why? 2. Do you think Chinese cuisine is a kind of culture? If so, please state your reasons. 3. What cultural elements can you feel from Chinese cuisine? 4. How well do you know Chinese cuisine? 5. Are you a gourmet? If so, please recommend some delicious food you have had. And do you think it necessary to spend much time eating? IV. Interpretation of the text This text can be divided into three parts: the first goes on to discuss the contrast between Chinese attitude and the western attitude toward food. The second explains how Chinese food has become an international food. The third part discusses the nature of Chinese food.
