Albatross (信天翁) albatrosses are easily caught, but captured birds are usually released, because of a superstition commonly held by sailors that killing an albatross brings bad luck. The superstition forms the theme of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. In the poem Coleridge describes how the crew of a ship are punished by horrible s ufferings and death after one of them kills an albatross. Owl (猫头鹰) The owl has a weird hooting or screeching call that sounds very ghostly in the silent night. So some people associated it with death. In the Middle Ages some people called the owl “night hag”; it was said to ba a witch in the form of a bird. The owl is still associated with witches in the symbolism of Halloween. Raven (渡鸦) Ravens have sharp sense of smell and can locate dead and decaying bodies at a great distance. So they are often associated with death. According to a legend, the great orator Cicero was warned of his death by a raven. On the day of his murder, a raven flew into his bedroom and pulled clothes off his bed. Magpie (喜鹊) The magpie has generally been regarded as a bird that brings ill luck. Some people spit three times to avoid ill luck when the bird was seen. In Scotland some people think it is very bad when one sees seven magpies together, and if magpies fly near the windows of a house, one of the persons living in t he house is going to die. Stork (鹳) An old belief is that the stork is a sign of good luck, because it foretells the birth of a child. Parents often explain the mystery of birth to their young children by saying that they were brought by the stork.
