Unit 12 Asking and Answering Questions (2) Topical Highlights 1.Techniques of Answering: hearing the question clearly, judging correctly the question, copying the original question pattern, repeating the previous remarks, asking back the question, answering questions partially, leaving room for improvement . 2. Causes for Avoidance: limitation of authorization, confidential consideration, slanderous questions, lack of certain knowledge, language barriers, allocated time limitation, communicative needs, unsuitable settings, etc. 3. Strategies for Avoidance: direct avoidance, transition with but, temporarily tabling, considering the question-raiser, redundant expressions, using allusions, fuzzy wording, attention-shifting, etc. Theme Presentation If viewed from information science, answering questions is to feed question-raisers with the required information. As far as the use of language is concerned, to answer questions well proves to be an art of speech. This unit will, therefore, focus on the major techniques of answering questions euphemistically, appropriately and tactfully. 1. Techniques of Answering In a question-and-answer session (especially in an oral defense), an answerer should be quick in thinking and expressing ideas. On the one hand, the answerer should organize the answer in a flexible way according to the nature of the question; that is, he should think over the answer on his own so as not to be controlled by the question-raisers, and should take the initiative. 1) Hearing the Question Clearly Attentively catching the question forms the basis of answering, without which the answerer might give an apparently right but actually wrong answer, or answer what is not asked. Nothing is more frustrating to a questioner than an answer that misses the point or drifts into territory irrelevant to the query. For example: Ex. 12-1 Pardon? (Beg your pardon? I beg your pardon?
