SHEAR MOD UL US FOR MgO AND OTHER MINERALS

Abstract : In t he p resent p aper , t he temperat ure dependence of t he isot hermal bulk modulus B T ( T)
and t he isot ropic shear modulus G ( T) are investigated . The relationship s for B T ( T) and G ( T) are
discussed wit h t he assumptions t hat t he dimensionless t hermoelastic p arameter Γand t he isot hermal
Poisson ’s ratio σ are independent of temperat ure T when T is higher t han t he Debye temperat ure Θ

. These relations are used to calculate t he values of B T ( T) and G ( T) at different temperat ures T for
eight minerals. The result s are found to p resent clo se agreement wit h t he experiment al dat a .
