美国文学Henry James and Sherwood Anderson

Life Born in a wealthy cultured family in New York with a philosopher and theologist father. His brother William James is also a famous philosopher and psychologist. In 1855, when James was 12, the family embarked on a three-year tour of Europe that included London, Paris and Geneva. The experience was to have a profound influence on James’s life and writing. For many years he alternated visits to England, France and Italy with stays in the USA. In 1875, he decided that Europe was the ideal home and settled in Paris, where he met Flaubert and Maupassant. Then he went to England where the most well-known writers of the period, such as Conrad and Kipling, accepted him as a friend and appreciated his books. In 1915, he became British subject. In 1916, he died in London. In 1976, his ashes were removed to the Poet’s corner in Westminster Abbey. He never took part in public affairs or showed much interest in the economic and social changes of the period. He was deeply interested in the contrast between the old world and the new one, between the European way of life and the American one. The Portrait of A Lady The Portrait of A Lady (1881) is generally considered to be his masterpiece. It tells about the fate of one of those splendid Jamesian American girls, Isabel Archer, arriving in Europe, full of hope, and with a will to live a free and noble life, only to fall prey to the sinister designs of two vulgar and unscrupulous expatriates.
