Jun．2007，Volume 6，No．6(Serial No．48) Chinese Business Review,ISSN1537-1506，USA Endogeneity of WTO in the gravity model：China and ASEAN zHoU Xlnn．bo (Lingnan(University)College．Zhongshan University Guangzhou 510275．Chind) Abstract：This paper studies the endogeneity of WTO dummy variable in the gravity model about the trade in the region of China and ASEAN．We first present a two-stage test approach f0r the endogeneity of WTO dummy , than transforlTl the endogeneity problem to a simultaneous system about WTO and trade ． and construct an MLE estimation approach to the simultaneous mode1．The estimate of the coefficient of WTO dummy is positive ． as opposed to the negative sign in the exogeneity case．From the estimation of the endogenous mode1 ． WT0 has creation fold effect and strong trade diversion effect on export modelin the region ． Key words：WTO dummy；endogenous gravity model；simultaneous model；MLE；trade effect 1．Intr0ducti0n The effect ofWorld Trade Organization(WTO1 on international trade is one of the most active research areas in trade empirical work．Recently,Rose A．(2004)asked us a question：“Do you really know that the WTO increases trade?”By using a standard
