Book 1-Unit 1 2. Suppose you meet one of your new classmates at the canteen. Make up a dialogue and pay attention to the proper beginning and ending. Hello, … Before you listen, think about what you may say to a group of friends who come to say goodbye to you at a farewell party. Draft some words in the circle below. Book 1-Unit 1 Listening Two Book 1-Unit 1 Notes to Listening Two Discourse analysis is a very important aspect of training communicative abilities of the language learners. Teachers can introduce the concept of moves (steps in non-technical term) for discourse analysis and genre analysis. A move embodies the purpose of the speaker/writer for the communicative effects. It is often closely related to the syntactic structures of a particular sentence and their position in a discourse. Teachers need to discuss three things at the same time: the function of the sentence, its syntactic structure, and its position in the discourse. In other words, teachers need to explain what it means by best sentence used in the best place for an appropriate purpose. Book 1-Unit 1 to put my feelings to words: to express my feelings in words so many of you would come here …: would indicates a previous assumption or wish that there would be so many people to come to her farewell party Examples: Book 1-Unit 1 Now, listen to the recording and then compare it with your classmates. Discuss the 2 questions: Is this speech communicatively effective? What does this effectiveness result from? The teacher’s speech was very effective, because the speech contains 5 moves in discourse structure: a. a wonderful surprise … b. sad to say goodbye… c. six years together… d. felt lucky to have worked with them… e. will miss them in the new place…. Book 1-Unit 1 Work in pairs: One student reads the functions and the other speaks out the sentences in Actual Words Spoken. Then check your answers. Actual Words Spoken I’m afraid I must leave now. Let’s have lunch sometime
