PART TWO: LEARNING HOW TO WRITE II. DEVELOPING SENTENCE SKILLS: Using Figures of Speech Using our familiar vocabulary to create a figure of speech is usually more effective than using any fancy word. Simile: compares one thing to another. It uses such words as “like” or “as…as.” In a simile, the writer usually compares the subject described with something that is familiar to most reader. Metaphor: is a simile taken a step further. Such words as “like” and “as…as” are omitted. Compared with a simile, a metaphor is less literal and more figurative. PART TWO: LEARNING HOW TO WRITE II. DEVELOPING SENTENCE SKILLS: Using Figures of Speech Exercise 10 The following are some flat statements. Use a simile or metaphor to bring out a more vivid picture. Examples: His black eyes are shining. S His black eyes are shining like diamonds under sunlight. M His eyes are two black diamonds. 1. Her cheeks are red. 2. She has long straight hair. 3. On her round face are a pair of metal rimmed glasses. 4. The books pile up on his desk. 5. The room gives out an unpleasant smell. PART TWO: LEARNING HOW TO WRITE II. DEVELOPING SENTENCE SKILLS: Complex Sentence A complex sentence is made up of an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses, i.e. subordinate clauses.
