Animals are endowed with various meanings and used to express different emotions. In different cultures, the symbols of animals are diverse. In Chinese culture, mandarin duck （鸳鸯） means loyal and steadfast love, but in western culture, mandarin duck means nothing. If we should translate “mandarin ducks” which mean happy couples in Chinese, we’d better translate to “a pair of lovebirds”. 鸳鸯： （中）忠诚和坚定的爱情 =（西）比翼鸟 （西）没什么意思。 Cuckoo（杜鹃） symbolizes the coming of spring which is liked by Chinese people and also means the dreariness and sorrow, but in western culture cuckoo means fool. When David Hawkes translated the “dream in Red Mansions”, he translated the supporting role “紫鹃(cuckoo)” into Nightingale to express the tragic destiny of the role 杜鹃（中）春天到来沉寂和悲伤。（西）傻瓜 Owl（猫头鹰） means justice and wisdom in western culture, people always say “as wise as an owl”, but it is diverse in China. People in China think the cry of owl means bad things are coming. Magpie in China is definitely a good symbol and means good things are coming. 猫头鹰（中）叫声是指不好的东西都来了。 （西）正义和智慧 Western people have no favorable impression of bat（蝙蝠）. They say “as blind as a bat” or “crazy as a bat”. They connect bat with blindness, ugliness and blood animals and feel scared and disgust.
