A b str a c t A s an im portan t com ponent of the sp lendid traditional C h inese cu lture, T C M (abbrev iation of T raditional C hinese M edicine) has m ade great contributions to both the health and prosperity of C hinese nation. D ue to its rem arkab le therapeutic and health-preserv ing effect, over the past few decades T C M has been attracting an increasing attention from all over the w orld. M ore and m ore foreigners com e to C hina to learn it and there has been a huge upsurge in the learn ing of T C M . In this circum stance, a large num b er of T C M book s n eed to be translated into E ng lish , w hich is the m ost w idely used language in the w orld. A s w e all know , T C M term s are the foundation for foreign T C M learners to m aster T C M theories, so it is urgent to translate T C M term s into E nglish . H ow ever, E nglish translation of T C M term s is in chaotic state :w ithout the gu idance of a translation theory and un ified translation criteria, different translators translate the sam e T C M term differently. T h is chaos prevents foreign T C M learners from understanding T C M theories accurately an d m akes th em confused about T C M . T herefore, this thesis aim s at solv ing this prob lem under the gu idance of Skopostheorie. T he author attem pts to estab lish un ified criteria and find strategies of T C M term translation gu ided by translation criterion and three rules (skopos ru le, coherence ru le and fidelity rule) in S kopostheorie.
