Introduction of Toni Morrison Toni Morrison was born in Lorain, Ohio, where her parents had moved to escape the problems of southern racism. Her family were migrants, sharecroppers on both sides. Morrison grew up in the black community of Lorain. She spent her childhood in the Midwest and read voraciously, from Jane Austen to Leo Tolstoy. Morrisons father told her numerous folktales of the black community (a method of storytelling that would later work its way into Morrisons writings). Jane Austen (1775-1817) an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely writers in English literature. Her realism, biting irony (辛辣的讽刺) and social commentary as well as her acclaimed plots have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics Masterpieces: Pride and Prejudice Sense and Sensibility Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) a Russian novelist, short story writer, essayist, playwright and philosopher, who primarily wrote novels and short stories. Tolstoy was a master of realistic fiction and is widely considered one of the greatest novelists of all time. He is best known for two long novels, War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877). In 1949 Morrison entered Howard University in Washington, D.C, America’s most distinguished black college, where she received a B.A. in English in 1953. She continued her studies at Cornell University in New York, earned a Master of Arts degree in English from Cornell University in 1955, for which she wrote a thesis on suicide in the works of William Faulkner and Virginia Woolf. After graduation, Morrison became an English instructor at Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas (1955–1957), then returned to Howard to teach English.
