Chinese paper cutting 5、appreciation Use: As is still partly the case outside of China, various paper objects and figures used to be buried with the dead or were burned at the funeral ceremony. Paper cuttings, which were usually of symbolic character, were part of this ritual. They also often served as decorations for sacrificial offerings to the ancestors and gods. Time: Chinese paper cutting is one of China’s most popular folk arts. Archaeological finds trace the tradition back to the 6th century. History Modern paper cutting has developed into a commercial industry. Paper-cutting remains popular in contemporary China, especially during special events like the Chinese New Year or weddings. In 2009, the Chinese paper cutting was listed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists. It is recognized and listed because it has a history of more than 1500 years and it represents cultural values of the people throughout China.
