Communication Styles High Context or Low Context Meeting in the West A group of American professors were meeting for a Friday afternoon presentation about a paper one of them had written. After the presentation, there was a heated discussion. A Chinese guest professor was disturbed by the atmosphere, and got the idea the professors didn’t like each other at all. She was surprised that after the discussion, they all left the room in a good mood, wishing each other a good weekend. A US marketing manager was finding it increasingly difficult to work in Japan. In meetings, the colleagues hardly ever said anything. When they were asked if they agreed with his suggestions they always said ‘yes’, but they didn’t do anything to follow up the ideas. The only time they opened up was in a bar in the evening, but that was getting stressful, as they seemed to expect him to go out with them on a regular basis. Meeting in the East High Context Cultures Focus more on keeping positive relationships between people. Context of situation is important (Non-verbal cues are also important.) Message is usually said indirectly Low Context Cultures Generally focus on the task. Meaning is explicit and put into words. Message is usually said directly. (But in indirect language is often used to be polite.) High context Low context Japan China Spain Italy UK France USA Germany Indirect Communication is sometimes used in order to be polite. For example: Is that your bag on my desk? (May mean move your bag.) What do you think they really mean? Those chocolates look nice. You said you’d be here by eight. Are you busy?
