Early Greece;The terrain of Greece is barren and rugged, and not highly suited to agriculture; 3000BC;1. Minoan Civilization;Crete was home to the “Minoan” Civilization. It was the most advanced civilization in Greece until it collapsed around 1500BC. Minoan civilization was the first advanced European civilization.;The Minoans enjoyed sport and were one of the first cultures to have leisure time.;Minoan civilization eventually completely disappeared. There are two theories explaining this. A huge volcanic eruption, or invasion from the mainland which the pacifistic Minoan people could not resist. Perhaps both are true.;Some attribute the Atlantis myth to this event. It was possibly told as a story by the Egyptians at the time.;2. Mycenaean Civilization;Following the destruction of the Minoan Civilization on Crete, most of Greece was conquered by the “Mycenaeans”. ;Mycenaean swords.;Burial Tombs;Mycenaean fortresses were large and served as the centre of power for their civilization. ;3. Dark Ages;The famous Iliad and Odyssey were written at this time. Some suggest that the dark ages were not really so “dark”.;Design became simpler;4. Archaic Greece;Regions in this time became known as “ethnos” and shared laws and defence. Polis were similar to city-states of later times, and became the basic unit of civilization.;Slavery was extremely common, even for non-foreigners who fell into debt. ;The Greeks had many gods, the foremost was Zeus, he was the lord of the Heavens. Gods were thought to be like humans with weaknesses and vices. Zeus was said to frequently rape young boys and girls.;The confluence of Greek civilization with other civilizations such as the Hittites and the Egyptians created new ideas and this later became Philosophy. Early thinkers were Thales, Pythagoras and Xenophanes.
