斯坦培克（1902-1968）美国小说家。 出生于加利福尼亚州蒙特雷县塞利纳斯镇一个面粉厂主家庭。在母亲的熏陶下，很早就接触欧洲文学。1920至1925年间，他曾在斯坦福大学选修英国文学和海洋生动学课堂，并从事体力劳动谋生。在大学学习期间就开始写作，1929年发表第一部长篇小说《金杯》 ，后发表两部小说《天堂的牧场》和《献给一位无名的神》 ，都未引起重视。1935年《托蒂亚平地》出版，立即受到好评，此后又发表《胜负未决的战斗》 、 《鼠与人》 、 《长谷》 、 《愤怒的葡萄》是他的代表作。获普利策奖。第二次世界大战期间，他到欧洲当过战地记者，写过报道和宣传作品。后期主要作品是两部长篇小说《伊甸园以东》和《我们的不满的冬天》 ，斯坦培克于1962年获得诺贝尔文学奖。1964年获美国总统自由勋章。 IV.
