Whitman is among the most influential poets in America, often called the father of free verse. His work was very controversial in its time, particularly his poetry collection Leaves of Grass, which was described as obscene for its overt sexuality. Walt Whitman Early in his career, he also produced a temperance novel, Franklin Evans (1842). Whitmans major work, Leaves of Grass, was an attempt at reaching out to the common person with an American epic. Walt died at age 72 and his funeral became a public spectacle. The book - Leaves of Grass This book is notable for praise of the senses during a time when such candid displays were immoral. While much previous poetry relied on symbolism, allegory, and meditation on the religious and spiritual world, Leaves of Grass exalted the body and the material world. He elevates the human mind or the spirit, deeming both worthy of poetic praise. Themes Extol the ideal of equality of things and beings, democracy, nature, labour and creation and freedom Celebrate mans diginity, the self-reliance spirit, the individual value and brightest future of mankind Praise the expansion of America Express his pursuit of love and happiness, his ideas about death and beauty of death Attack the slavery system and racial discrimination etc Poem Appreciation --- Song of Myself (1345 lines) The Big Myself I celebrate myself, and sing myself, And what I assume you shall assume.
