As an important chemical material and intermediate, 1,2-pentanediol is the key intermediate in the process of preparation for propiconazole, also has a wildly practical and potential use in many other fi elds, such as medicine, surfactant and polyster fi ber. Ten synthetic methods of 1,2-pentanediol at home and abroad from 1984 were reviewed, and their advantages and disadvantages were discussed. In addition, a comparison was made between these synthesis methods. Although these synthetic routes are viable, developing routes of low cost, high yield and low pollution is very important.
