Beijing 1.The Forbidden City The Forbidden City was the Chinese imperial palace from the Ming Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty, and now houses the Palace Museum. It was built in 1406 to 1420, the complex consists of 980 buildings and covers 720,000 m2 (7,800,000 sq ft). For almost 500 years, it served as the home of emperors and their households, as well as the ceremonial and political center of Chinese government. The palace complex exemplifies traditional Chinese palatial architecture, and has influenced cultural and architectural developments in East Asia and elsewhere. The Forbidden City was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987, and is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world. 2.The Great Wall The Great Wall of China is a series of fortifications made of stone, brick, tamped earth, wood, and other materials, generally built along an east-to-west line across the historical northern borders of China in part to protect the Chinese Empire or its prototypical states against intrusions by various nomadic groups or military incursions by various warlike peoples or forces. The entire wall with all of its branches measure out to be 21,196 km (13,171 mi) and it stretches from Shanhaiguan in the east, to Lop Lake in the west. The wall built between 220–206 BC by the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang and the majority of the existing wall was reconstructed during the Ming Dynasty. Other purposes of the Great Wall have included border controls, allowing the imposition of duties on goods transported along the Silk Road, regulation or encouragement of trade and the control of immigration and emigration. 3.The Summer Palace The Summer Palace, or officially in China Garden of Nurtured Harmony, is a vast ensemble of lakes, gardens and palatial buildings in Beijing, China.
