Abstract The recent progress of transition metal dichalcogenide nanomat erials that could be
described as MX ( M Mo, W, Nb, T a, Ti, Zr, Hf, Re; X S , Se) has been reviewed. The

preparat ion, formation mechanism and applications of this kind of inorganic fullerene-like nanotubes
have been reported T he distinctive structure of these nanotubes especially t he funct ional metal. , /
nonmetal com binat ion, enables them to be good candidate for scanning probe microprobe, solid
lubricant and energy storage media for lithium and hydrogen.
