FIGURE 1.3.1. A solution curve for the differential equation y = x - y together with tangent lines having slope x-y at the point (x,y). Objective: The graphical and numerical methods of this and later sections can be used to construct approximate solutions of the differential equations y = f (x , y); A graphical method : Through each of a representative collection of points in the plane we draw a short line segment having the proper slope m = f (x , y) . All these line segments constitute a slope field (or a direction field) for the equation y = f (x , y ) .
