惠特曼(Whitman) Walter Whitman (Walt Whitman) (1819~1892) American poet. Born in Long Island, a small coastal village. My father was a local farmer. When Whitman was 5 years old, the family moved to Broolyn, where his father worked as a carpenter and built the house. Whitman started elementary school there. Poor in life, Whitman read only 5 years of primary school. He worked as a messenger, learned typesetting, and later when the rural teachers and editors. This life experience made him widely exposed to the people, exposed to nature, and had a great influence on the later poetry creation. After 1841, he returned to New York and began working as a printer. He soon became a journalist and began writing. A few years later, he became a more prestigious newspaper the eagle newspaper editor in chief, to write against the Employer against slavery, exploitation paper and commentary. In 40s, he joined the free land party, opposed slavery in the United States and advocated land reform. In 1848, revolutions broke out in Western European countries and had a great influence on Whitman.
