Methods Forty-eight 28-day-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into experimental group(n=24) and control group (n=24). The maxillary occlusal splints were designed in the experimental group to shift the mandibles laterally during closure. The rats were killed after7， 14， 21， or 28 days(n=6/group each time)respectively. Mandibular were resected for soft x-ray radiographing and pointing， then the distances between the points were measured with image analysis software. Results The experimental rats developed an asymmetric mandible， shorter in horizontal dimension（Cd-Me、Co-Me、Go-Me） but longer in the vertical dimension（CdH、CoH、MeH） on the ipsilateral side（P＜0.05）. Compared with control rats， the experimental rats developed a smaller mandible（ Cd-Me、Co-Me、Go-MeCdH、CoH、MeHon both side（P＜0.05）.
