ASSIGNMENT 3 MANAGEMENT AND STRATEGY FOR IS 1 The Messycorp Adventure Denis N Lane Page 1 of 14 09/10/02 Abstract This paper looks at a difficult scenario that includes organisational intrigue and mismanagement. It outlines the assessments that candidates to IT managerial positions need to make before accepting new positions and the considerations necessary for quick wins in the first months following appointment. Overall, the message is to gain a thorough understanding of current operations, develop a relationship with clients and above all deliver. Introduction The scenario presented here has some quite alarming issues but curiously the detail seems to be a little more than one could hope to have about the fate of the past MIS Manager as a job applicant and relatively little information about the business, particularly relating to its industry, system architecture, the size of MIS, clients served, current business alignment and strategic plans. Importantly, there is no clear indication, outside the Marketing area, of any broad dissatisfaction with service levels maintained by MIS. There is no vision of the future neither specifically for information services nor for the business. The CEO to date appears to take little interest in MIS and the Marketing Director appears to be a politically strong player within the organisation. The range of challenges presented would give one pause and raise significant questions that would need to be determined prior to accepting the position. It would appear that the Board has laid the foundation for change through its direction for a review of the overall IT strategy and underpinned by concerns about any poorly considered adventure into electronic business.
