FULL-SCALE CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF MINERAL FIBER BOARDS: MISSION IMPOSSIBLE? Hans-Ulrich Hummel Knauf Gips KG, Iphofen, Germany Email: hummel.hans-ulrich@knauf.de Abstract Today‘s suspended ceiling systems offer gridbased constructions with a wide range of acoustical options. The panels consist of rock wool, glas fibers, cellulose fibers, perlite, clay and other minerals and starch, acting as binder. Several competitive products are in the markt with different composition, counting for acoustics, fire resistance and duration. The inhomogeneous material can be analysed only after sieve and gravity separation by combination of different analytical methods as: x-ray powder diffraction, sem in combination with elemental analyses and imagine analysis and thermogravimetrical methods. In this way full scale analysis are possible with a typical reliability factor of ± 5 % by volume. Suspended ceiling systems have been developed in the early 1950‘s. Today‘s suspended ceiling systems offer grid based constructions with a wide range of acoustical control panels. Ceiling panel sizes are most commonly 2 x 2 or 2 x 4 and are typically 5/8“ or 3/4“ thick. Mineral fiber based ceiling panels are commonly produced by means of water-felted process, similar to paper production process. This process allows to introduce well orientated mineral fibers for excellent sound attenuation and provides: • good ceiling attenuation class • perforated and textured surface performance • light weight Mineral fiber based ceiling panels commonly consist of: rock wool glas fibers cellulose fibers (pulp) perlite clay and other minerals starch Mineral fiber based ceiling panels Several competitive products are in the market: • Armstrong • Donn-USG • OWA (Odenwald) • Knauf AMF •
