Wear mechanisms Wear is “the progressive loss of substance from the operating surface of a body occurring as a result of relative motion at the surface”. To explain this, one can imagine a simple tribo-mechanical system consisting of two metal bodies moving against each other. In this case there is no lubricant, only gaseous atmosphere. The material losses, on one of the materials, due to wear processes can occur in the following ways: Material transfer from one of the bodies to the other, material loss from the metal body to the atmosphere, or by formation of reaction products. To properly characterize the type of wear occurring in a system the following characteristics should be specified: I. The type of relative motion, II. The interacting elements, III.
