Let’s Celebrate Our Halloween Words Competition Who knows the words on Halloween most? Halloween is a festival decorated in dark and yellow!!! Guess what is associated with Halloween? Why did the old Celts have the custom of Halloween? The old Celts, the ancestors of the present-day Irish, Welsh and Scottish people, regarded October 31st as Celtic New Year 2000 years ago. They considered the day as the end of the harvest in autumn and the beginning of the bitterly cold winter. The old Celts expressed their thanks by killing livestock and cooking food for the celebration of harvest to Apollo, the Sun God, who help people grow crops. They also supposed that the Sun God was captured for six months each year by Samhain, “the Lord of the Dead” or “Prince of the Darkness”, who brought the Celts the bitterly-cold winter and the long darkness. It was also believed by the Celts that on that day the spirits of anyone who had died would walk and mingle with the living body, looking for the living body to possess, which was thought the only way to come back to life. The old Celts baked all day the food they just got in, such as pumpkin, turnip, corn and so on, for the entertainments of the spirits of the dead. They carved scary faces out of turnips, beets, or potatoes and put the lit candle inside as lanterns hoping the spirits would leave peacefully. They decorated the windows of the house with the figures of witches and black cats so as not to be injured or possessed by the ghosts At night they put out all the fire , disguised themselves as ghosts by dressing up in freaky, scary costumes and made a big parade around the village or town in order to frighten the spirits of evil away.
