Dylan Thomas (1914-1953) Stanza 1- The first three lines contrast the creative and destructive forces that surround humans. L1 green “fuse”-the flower’s stem; the connotative meaning-explosive power L2 “Drives my green age;”-the power that causes growth in nature is the same force that causes the speaker to grow. “green age”-youth;spring and renewal L3 “Is my destroyer”-the speaker tells us his ultimate fate. L4 “dumb”-the speaker is unable to express the idea; “crooked rose”-blighted; not beautiful anymore L5 “My youth is bent”-the speaker shares the same fate as the flower; “bent”-a verb combines the speaker and the rose Stanza 2- the focus changes from relationship between man and the biological world to man and the geological world. L6 “the force”-the same with the first stanza that give birth to the mountain stream. L7 “blood”- is pushed through man’s veins; “the mouthing stream”-stream’s mouth is the place where it enters another body of water L8 “mine”-refers to the speaker’s blood L9 “dumb”-the speaker was unable to communicate with the rose L10 “mouth”-takes on an almost “vampirish quality” Stanza 3 L11The hand that whirls the water in the pool L12Stirs the quicksand; that ropes the blowing wind L13Hauls my shroud sail. L14And I am dumb to tell the hanging man L15How of my clay is made the hangmans lime. The force The hand , water life-giving shroud death/ rope of the mast Stanza 4 L16The lips of time leech to the fountain head; L17Love drips and gathers, but the fallen blood L18Shall calm her sores.
