She left home at 15 and worked as a nursemaid, and it was around this time that Lessing started reading material on politics and sociology that her employer gave her to read. She began writing around this time. Career She worked at various jobs such as nursemaid, telephone operator, typist and journalist and so on. She married twice before she moved to London in 1949. She earned her living by writing. She was Winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize for Literature. Her life and experience in Rhodesia have provided excellent material for her African stories, which have been widely acclaimed.
