Reflecting this, a nonlinear so il reaction m ode lw as estab lished reflecting non linear interact ion betw een so il reaction and reta in ing structure disp lacem ent. Based on th ism ode,l an elast ic subgrade reaction m ethod considering non linear interaction betw een so il and retai n ing structure w as deve loped for excavation eng ineering. In thism ethod, the process of excavation w as smi u lated by introduc ing a latera l earth pressure rem oval m ethod in front of the reta in ing structure. So ftening of the stiffness of soil spring induced by ex cavat ion and the red istr ibution o f stress and additional deform ation cau sed by soften ing w ere also considered. Then a com puter prog ram w as w ritten to calcu late load ing and deform ation of the retain ing structure during d ifferen t construction stages in a g iven situation.
