A Study on the Application of Low-impact Development in the Ecological Planning of Mountain Small-towns Lu Wu-qiang Central China Normal University Email: lwq1945@ Abstract China is a mountainous country, with two of thirds of its land being mountains and hills, and half of China’s population is living in the mountains and hills. Therefore, the mountain small-towns will be the main components of China’s urbanization. Taking into account of the complexity and vulnerable ecosystem of the mountain small-towns, a set of systematic ecological planning and regulating methods should be constructed on the basis of ecological theories for the planning and construction of those mountain small-towns. Therefore, in this paper the features of the mountain small-towns are analyzed in details and found that they are of high ecological sensitivity, vulnerable to ecological environmental change and of special ecological edge effects. The problems of the mountain small-towns in natural and social environment are also revealed. Furthermore, it is pointed out that the planning and regulating of the ecosystem of the mountain small-towns should be started from investigating and evaluating their ecological qualities and analyzing and forecasting their evolutional trend. Finally, it is suggested to apply the low-impact development in the planning and construction of the mountain small-towns, namely, to adopt low-impact techniques in gardening, urban management, industrial development and habitat environment construction for the environmental management and landscape design of the mountain small-towns.
