China is one of the count ries w ith t he most species and t he largest dist ribution area of elm. Key researches around genetic improvement of elm have been organized and carried out during t he Six th to Eighth F ive Year Plan periods( 19 85~ 1995) . Genetics and breeding of elm, especially t he ant-i disease breeding and the genetic basis st udies have been paid much at tent ion in many f oreig n countries. T he paper made an att em pt in summarizing the progress on g enet ics and breeding of elm species. T he t ar- gets for elm improvement and breeding, situat ion of conservat ion and utilizat ion of elm germplasm re- sources , select ion, hybridizat ion and ot her breeding measures applied in elm im provement prog rams in foreign count ries, and t he present situat ion of elm genet ics and breeding in China w ere all included. Discu ssions w ere set of f around principal problems in elm breeding and the f ut ure developing aims of China.
