Elements of Software Construction As taught in: Fall 2008 For Project 3, students were asked to design and implement an instant messaging system. This submission won the award for the most aesthetic user interface. (Courtesy of Sinchan Banerjee, Kristie DAmbrosio, Itai Turbahn, and Victor Wang. Used with permission.) Instructors: Prof. Daniel Jackson Prof. Robert Miller MIT Course Number: 6.005 Level: Undergraduate Course Description This course provides an introduction to the fundamental principles and techniques of software development that have greatest impact on practice. Topics include capturing the essence of a problem by recognizing and inventing suitable abstractions; key paradigms, including state machines, functional programming, and object-oriented programming; use of design patterns to bridge gap between models and code; the role of interfaces and specification in achieving modularity and decoupling; reasoning about code using invariants; testing, test-case generation and coverage; and essentials of programming with objects, functions, and abstract types. The course includes exercises in modeling, design, implementation and reasoning. Syllabus Course Meeting Times Lectures: 2 sessions / week, 1.5 hours / session Recitations: 1 session / week, 1 hour / session Objectives The objectives of this course are that, by the end: 1. You will have the skills to develop a small to medium-scale software system from scratch: formulating and analyzing the problem to be solved; exploring and articulating candidate designs; implementing in Java; and using testing and reasoning to ensure quality. 2. You will have a solid grasp of, and ability to apply, key software engineering ideas, including invariants, decoupling, and data abstraction. 3. You will be fluent in three essential and widely used design notations (state machines, module dependency diagrams, and object models) and able to use the
