Institute of Eng ineering M echnics, CEA, H arbin 1 0080, China) Abs tract: The base isolation technique w ith the lam inated rubber bearing is a new seism ic technology for building structures. It is popu larized in seism ic areas all over the world. Butwhether the overall construction cost could be increased due to the use of the baseisolation system, there are still no definite quantitative indices to show the de tails. In this paper, tw o typical baseisolated bu ilding structures ( one belongs class B and another belongs C in Chi na Seism ic Bu ild ing Code) are selected to be compared and analyzed about their overall construction cost. Costs of three design schem es, ( 1) w ithout baseisolation system, ( 2) w ith baseisolation system and increasing the seism ic safe factor, ( 3) w ith baseisolation system and keeping the seism ic safe factor at the same levelw ith its nonisola ted counterpart, for each bu ild ing is evaluated. From the analysis, it can be concluded that on the same seism ic risk level the proper use of the base isolation system can reduce the overall bu ilding costs slightly.
