Founding and early period In 1877, the newspaper was founded by Stilson Hutchins. In 1880, the newspaper added a Sunday edition, thus becoming the city’s first newspaper to publish seven days a week. History In 1889, Hutchins sold the newspaper to Frank Hatton and Beriah Wilkins. In 1894, Wilkins acquired Hattons share of the newspaper at Hattons death. In 1905, Wilkins’ son sold the post to John Roll McLean, owner of the Cincinnati Enquirer. In 1933, the newspaper was purchased in a bankruptcy auction by Eugene Meyer. In 1946, Meyer was succeeded as publisher by his son-in-law, Philip Graham. Meyer-Graham period In 1954, the newspaper consolidated its position by acquiring and merging with its last morning rival, the Washington Times-Herald. After Philip Grahams death in 1963, control of The Washington Post Company passed to Katharine Graham, his wife and Meyers daughter. turning 1972, the newspaper reported Watergate Scandal and won a great reputation. In 1986, the company bought the cable TV system and became the twentieth cable TV company in American. In 1996, the newspaper established a website. In 2004 The Washington Post won 18 of the Pulitzer Prize . In 2008 The Washington Post won 6 of the Pulitzer Prize . In 2010, due to financial reasons, Post sold the Newsweek From 2007 to 2013, due to the rise of electronic media
