2012 4 204 310004 On the Multiple Ironies and Masculinities in The Remains of the Day Zhang Ping Zhejiang University of Technology, Hangzhou 310004, China Kazuo Ishiguro expresses the aesthetic effects of subtlety, tension and multiple perspectives by the employment of verbal irony, situational irony and structural irony in The Remains of the Day, and meanwhile he explores the hurt and repression of hegemonic masculinity on the leading protagonist Stevens and Kazuo Ishiguro depicts the process of Stevens departure from hegemonic masculinity and ﬁ nal attainment of his real self-identity. Kazuo Ishiguro strongly criticizes the social hierarchy and hegemonic masculinity by the artistic means of multiple ironies in The Remains of the Day which is a masterpiece to combine the literary merits and social values.
