TURBULENCE MODELLING1 SPRING 2017 8.1 Eddy-viscosity models 8.2 Advanced turbulence models 8.3 Wall boundary conditions Summary References Appendix: Derivation of the turbulent kinetic energy equation Examples The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are transport equations for the mean variables in a turbulent flow. These equations contain net fluxes due to turbulent fluctuations. Turbulence models are needed to specify these fluxes. 8.1 Eddy-Viscosity Models 8.1.1 The Eddy-Viscosity Hypothesis y  The mean shear stress has both viscous and turbulent parts. In simple shear :  U η μ ρuv (1) y  turbulent  viscous U The most popular type of turbulence model is an eddy-viscosity model (EVM) which assumes that turbulent stress is proportional to mean velocity gradient in a manner similar to viscous stress. In simple shear (see later for the general case): U ρuv μt (2) y  is called an eddy viscosity or turbulent viscosity. The mean shear stress is then t U η μeff (3) y where the total effective viscosity is μ μμ
