View Point Billet Casting for Critical End Use Applications Using CASTRIGHT IITM LARSTM Paper presented by - Shaun Hamer, V.P. Projects, Almex USA, Inc., Buena Park, California, USA in Metalworld Extrusion Summit 2007 s India advances into making sophisticated and more critical aluminum products, it will have to focus more Aon the quality of the molten aluminum and control over casting practices. Also, as aluminum scrap recycling activity will increase in India, more efficient technology will be required in the Indian cast houses. Since LARS™ metal treatment systems and CASTRIGHT II large diameter (over 600 mm) billet molds have been put into operation on aerospace alloys in 1997, over one billion pounds (5000,000 tons) of 2XXX and 7XXX alloys have been cast. This paper analyzes the quality of the finished product (i.e. plate, forgings and extrusions) as evaluated with various instruments and co-relates it with the operating parameters. It is demonstrated that metal cast using CASTRIGHT II tooling system with in-line LARS™ and 50 PPI ceramic foam filtration is capable of consistently reducing inclusion count to below 0.01mm2/kh based upon PodFa analysis to provide excellent quality at the finished product stage. It is also demonstrated that by using LARS™ system, a plant can successfully eliminate the requirement of a holding furnace in the typical cast-house set-up.
