In our day and age, as busy as a bee, as happy as a lark.;Good English writing discourages what are called clichés or trite expressions. Chinese, on the other hand, gives its approval to well-known four-character expressions. A native English speaker would frown on this sentence: He slept like a log and woke up at the crack of dawn, fresh as a daisy. The reason is that it contains three clichés: slept like a log, at the crack of down, and fresh as a daisy.;While English proverbs are part of the oral culture in the United States, they are not often used in writing. Good writers in Chinese often begin an essay with a Chinese proverb. It shows knowledge of the past, an important Chinese value. But Americans do not value the past as much as the Chinese do. They think it is more important to think of something new and original. So a good writer in English will try to explain ideas in a new way and not use English proverbs if possible.;3.
