Mark Twain Content Local colorism and its background Local colorists Mark Twain and his works On Huckleberry Finn Mark Twain’s contributions Local Colorism √ p130-2 Hamlin garland, in his Crumbling Idols, defines local colorism as having “such quality of texture? and background? that it could not have been written in any other place or by anyone else than a native.” p130 As a trend, it first made its presence felt in the late 1860s and early 70s. Not until the turn of the 20th C did local colorism cease to be a dominant fashion. P131para2 Local Colorism Local colorists tended to idealize and glorify, but they never forget to keep an eye on the truthful color of local life. P131para3 Although local colorism lost its momentum toward the end of the 19th century, the local spirit continued to inspire and fertilize the imagination of authors such as Willa Cather, John Steinbeck and William Faulkner.
