Life and Career Dickens was born at Portsmouth, the son of an unpractical and improvident (无远见的) government navy clerk. Dickens was exceptionally bright and articulate. The boy had a little primary education. At the age of 12, young Dickens had to work at a shoe-blacking factory.; ;Dickenss birthplace at No.1 Mile End Terrace, Landport, a district on the outskirts of Portsmouth.;Later he became a Parliamentary reporter for newspapers. He married and published his first work Sketches by Boz 《博兹札记》, in 1836. He was the editor of several newspapers and magazines. He traveled to America twice and widely on the Continent. Points of View A spokesmen of the poor people It is his serious intention to expose and criticize all the poverty, injustice, hypocrisy and corruptness. He hates the state apparatus, especially the Parliament, and yet he is convinced that the state should intervene to control the rapacity of landlords and capitalists and to raise the living standards of the working class. ;He is interested in social reform. He is certain that reform should work in the direction of reducing aristocratic privilege. He wants improvement in the life of the poor, but is afraid of a real revolution.
