Skimming for Main Idea;Basic Ideas On Skimming for Main Idea;Reading Tips;If the paragraph lacks the topic sentence, think about the topic of the paragraph and what the writer is trying to tell you about the topic; you may put the ideas of several sentences together to get the main idea or sum up the main idea on your own. To find the main idea of a passage, read its title, and its subtitles, if there is any; read the first and the last paragraph of the passage; read only the first and the last sentence of the rest of the paragraphs in the passage; try to recognize the words and phrases that are closely related to the title of the passage; try to piece together the bits of information gathered from the rapid reading. Don’t read every word of a passage, not even every sentence of it. Let your eyes skim over the passage, taking in key words.;Example; A further reason for football’s intensity is that the game is played like a war.
