R. China), the representative crude saline soil sampleswere selected for the expermi entof freezing and thaw ing cycles in open systems. M oving patterns ofwater and solutem igration and variations of shear strength of the representative crude saline soilswere studied for differentkinds of soils. The resultof the tests shows thatmoving patternsofwater and solute in low liquid lmi it clay under several freezing and thaw ing cycles are gener- ally consistentw ith water and solutem igrating upwards. The distribution of cohesion of low liquid lmi it clay decrea- ses linearly form bottom to top and the distribution of the internal friction angle is in s- shape. Both thewater and the solute in low liquid lmi it clayw ith sandmove to the cold end under freezing and thawing cycles and theprofile of ion indicates higher concentration in m iddle than in both ends. The distribution of cohesion of low liquid lmi it clayw ith sand is in reverse s- shape, while the distribution of internal friction angle is in s- shape.
