Th r s arch fforts focusing on th ∀urban∀ natur of th languag s today, which originat d in China at th turn of th c ntury, ar now incr asingly join d int rnationally. Th larg scal , highsp d urbanization proc ss taking plac in China provid s t sting grounds for th n w th ori s and m thods of ULS. Among th th ori s, Sp ch Community Th ory propos s th primacy of community ov r languag and th int raction basis of communityformation, w hich xplains th m rg nc of n w sp ch communiti s on th basis of industrial immigrant population. Urban languag s ar highly variabl , adaptiv , and multinorm d, in sharp contrast with w hat is found in a small, clos knit rural community. To study urban languag s, traditional linguistic approach s d p nding on introsp ction, r trosp ction and individual obs rvations ar no long r valid. Inst ad, th m thods g n rally adopt d in social r s arch s such as random sampling, structural obs rvations and controll d xp rim nts ar us d with good r sults.
