Unit Four Electric appliances Color TV Color TV is based on the principle of color addition. Any color can be obtained by the addition of the three primary colors, red, green and blue. The three primary colors, when added together in equal amounts produce the color illustrated in fig.7-2. Varying the intensities of the primary colors can produce other colors. Let us be clear, we are not talking about paints or printing, we are talking about colored lights falling on a screen, which is additive color mixing. A color TV must be compatible with ordinary monochrome receivers, that is, a color broadcast must produce a satisfactory monochrome picture on a monochrome receiver, and also a monochrome broadcast must produce a satisfactory monochrome picture on a color set. The three primary color signals could be transmitted individually, and used subsequently to reconstruct a color image at the receiver. However, this method is not used because the system would not be compatibility. A color TV picture is actually a monochrome picture but with colors added for the main parts of the screen. It approximates to the process of painting color on to a black and white photograph. The required color information is in the chrominance signal. To illustrate this idea of the color being in a separate signal, you can turn down the color control to eliminate the color signal, and the result is a black-and-white picture. The monochrome picture is produced by the luminance signal. With both the color signal and the luminance signal, the picture is reproduced in natural color. There are many schemes that have been proposed for the transmission of color TV, e.g. NTSC, PAL and SECAM. These differ in detail, but all utilize the same basic philosophy.
