A bstrac t: Both N ew C riticism and Structura lism take a lingu istic approach to the problem o f literar iness. In spite o f th is,
they differ w ide ly in the ir studies. Influenced by F erd inand D e Sau ssure, structura lism theory conside rs the litera ry tex t as
a se lf-reflex ive system o f signs, w hich has no connection w ith reality. W hereas N ew C riticism be lieves that there is a con-
nection betw een tex t and the signf ied, and the lite rary w o rk is am biguous.
