:19 世纪的英国新大学运动是一场规模巨大的高等教 改革运动。 在功利主义
的导引之下, 英国高等教 在目标与职能、学科与课程等方面做出重大调整, 对古典绅士教
传统进行了必要修正, 有力地推进了英国高等教 的世俗化、平民化与泛智化进程。 在这场改
革运动中, 英国高等教 调整了古典绅士教 与实用职业教 的关系, 调整了政府与社会在高
等教 中的角色定位, 成功实现了传统与现代的兼容。

New University Movement and the modernization of
higher education in England

Abstract:The “ New University ovement” undertaken in the 19th-century England
was a massive reform for higher education.Under the influence of utilitarianism, great modi-
fication on purpose and function, subject and curriculum in England s higher education was
achieved.Essential rectification was made to the classical gentleman education so much so
that secular, popularized education available to all people was facilitated.New University
ovement re-set the relationship between classical gentleman education and practical voca-
tional education, and reshaped the role of government and society for higher education.
Therefore, tradition successfully became compatible with the modern.
