Marketers have always been customer focused. They have repeatedly reminded the management (Management) to be customer oriented rather than production oriented. After the Second World War, the idea that customer is God is supreme, and has always dominated the world marketing. But the idea that customers are God seems to have gone out of fashion. Marketers have been selling worthless ideas to top management. A number of companies had been faithful to the marketing experts advice to customers, but saw millions of dollars lost, leaving only disaster. To see how we got into this mess, we had to go back to 1920s, when business was centered on production. Thats Henry #8226, Fords heyday, Ford said. Any customer can paint this car into whatever color he wants, as long as Ford is black.. In the production oriented era, entrepreneurs find the magical effect of advertising. Advertising experts say: advertised produced by popular demand, the public demand that makes mass production possible. One consequence of the second world war is that leading companies are beginning to target customers. Marketing experts, in charge of enterprises, the chief responsible for market research. But now every company is geared to customers. If more than a dozen companies are struggling to meet the needs of the same group of customers, it will be of little use to understand the needs of the customers. The problem with American Motor Corp is not how many customers, but how to compete with GM, Ford, Chrysler, and other imported vehicles.
