CHAPTER 12 Civil 3D Shortcuts INTRODUCTION A project’s data security and timeliness is always a concern, as is data sharing among design groups or contractors. Initially, Civil 3D provides minimal project support. How- ever, in essence, a drawing is a project or at least a data source to be shared during a project’s life. Civil 3D has a simple data-sharing method: shortcuts. Shortcuts use an ex- ternal LandXML file and, through this file, other drawings access object data. Shortcuts work very much like Xrefs and, like Xrefs, shortcuts can notify users of a data change. OBJECTIVES This chapter focuses on the following topic: • Data Shortcuts OVERVIEW Initially, Civil 3D considered a drawing a project. All drawing objects represent a project’s data. Considering a drawing a project is a radical departure from Autodesk Land Desktop’s strategy. In LDT, an extensive external folder structure holds much of a project’s data. As open and as vulnerable as it is, this strategy has saved many a project’s data. The drawing as a project also made it difficult to share data between drawings. A data shortcut is a LandXML file stored in a folder structure, and other drawings reference (use) the data shortcut to create their object instances. Civil 3D maintains links between the drawing and the shortcut. If the data shortcut definition changes, then Civil 3D notifies the user of the change and the drawing needs to be updated. A data shortcut expands data availability and ensures some degree of data quality. A new way of thinking is also required when using shortcuts. Because data resides in a drawing, drawings should
